Annual Garden Tour Offers Peek Into Great Yards
“It’s all about the garden and not about the lawn,” said Dr. Denny Weiss as he summed up the gardening projects on the property he and his wife Jan nurture year after year. The couple was one of the featured gardens in the third annual Master Gardener Garden Tour in the Yankton area.

Designing An Entrance Garden

Foundation plantings have traditionally been intended to screen cement foundations of houses. This is a bit short sighted, however. Creating a welcoming entrance garden is a more appropriate way go about designing these spaces. Entrance gardens are important as they're able to integrate houses and gardens with the surrounding landscape.

Entrance gardens should be welcoming and open. They can draw attention to architectural details or screen architectural flaws. When deciding what to use in the garden, try to avoid planting rapidly growing plants which can quickly become obtrusive, outgrow their allotted space, block views and obstruct access. Entrance garden are usually the front garden at most homes and can benefit from plants which have year-round interest, such as evergreens or deciduous shrubs with colorful autumn foliage or berries in the winter. Specimen shrubs, such as a interesting flowering deciduous shrub or a dwarf evergreen, work exceptionally well in an entrance garden. Use specimen shrubs sparingly in your garden, however, in order to avoid the one of everything look.

The shrubs which run between the entrance and corner of the house and are most effective when designed to be simple. Low growing shrubs generally work best as they won't block views from the windows. Tall shrubs require frequent pruning and often result in awkwardly shaped plants.

Corner plantings which include tall shrubs or even small trees screen back yards as well as blend the garden in with surrounding landscape. All shrubs in the entrance garden should be placed where they won't interfere views or touch the house when they mature.

Steer clear of exceedingly symmetrical designs since they can end up looking quite boring. Garden designs should have the same weight on both ends of the garden. Individual garden elements can consist of shrubs of different sizes, forms, and textures.

Simple designs often create the most successful gardens so try to limit the number of species of plants and paving material used in garden. You'll have an easier time tying your garden together. You'll also get you the most from each element. Strike a balance, variety is also important to create interest.

Plan your garden first on paper, before you begin planting, this give you something to refer to as you plant. Know the mature height of all the plants you'll be using in your design. One of the most common mistakes gardeners make is improper plant selection and placement. Another mistake is over planting. Though your garden may look a bit sparse early on, you'll avoid overcrowding in the future. Be sure to place your shrubs so that as they grow the foliage does not touch the structure. This will allow adequate air flow and will prevent the growth of mold.

To emphasize certain plants in your garden use contrasting shapes, colors, or textures. For instance, the large pale green leaves of a hydrangea contrast nicely with the dark green needles of a mugo pine.

A successful garden design requires more than simply screening the unsightly architectural flaws of a house. With thoughtful planning a foundation planting can be transformed into a welcoming entrance garden.

Without a hand sink, smoker operation sinks
Nearly every day for the last six years, Smokey Mountain BBQ grilled goodies in front of a Northland Hen House grocery store. Not anymore. The smoker is gone, along with the ribs, burnt ends, half and whole chickens, sliced turkey and ham, and baked beans. (Even custom-smoked grilled turkey during the holidays.)

Why Do Smokers Chain Smoke?

I recently noticed that one of my clients (Let’s call her Maria for the sake of this article) at my teaching profession was going through a common phase amongst people who want to stop smoking and finally escape from nicotine addiction, where they start to become frustrated, angry, desperate, unhappy, or annoyed with themselves that they smoke. But because of the lack of education about why she was a chain smoker and what the nicotine was doing to her, plus the true fact that she had not achieved that true desire that is needed to stop, she was going through an emotional rollercoaster, what I have named as  “Panicotine Syndrome” ©

This phase will eventually present itself to all smokers who have their two cents worth upstairs and they realise that they truly are mugs for smoking and they want out. But before I continue with telling you about my “Client” above, I would like to touch on a couple of things if I may. Wanting out of this wonderfully designed poisonous trap is great, however, unless you, the smoker who wants to quit smoking, puts in to practice a couple of crucial things then this phase will be about as far as you get in your quest to quit smoking before you roll back down the hill and light up another cigarette once again.

The point here is this:-

Nothing objective can be achieved without preperation or plan and the desire to endure all that presents itself during execution. The needed desire to see it through and succeed is only a desire that differs from any previous half hearted ones that the person with a true objective has had.

What I mean is this…You will always be a smoker unless you know completely why you do it and what makes you do it. When you know this, and have that superior desire, a little support, you too can walk away from the prison of nicotine addiction easily. I did, thousands of others did too. You are no different.

But when the “Panicotine Syndrome” © phase comes along to you, what will you do?

Lets get back to Maria…

We finished our meeting and with another client we headed off to a local cafeteria for a beer and some tapas. Now if you dont know , in Spain, if you are not a smoker then you may feel somewhat alienated because the majority of the population here smoke. They are all professional nicotine addicts thru and thru …and proud of it. The level of tobacco company brainwashing has peaked to the max here and it’s a pity.

We found a bar..I braced myself and thought ok ..I can suffer this for an hour so as not to be unsocial. The moment we walked through the “puerta” Maria started fumbling inside her handbag and drew out the marlboro lights. Before the order had left my lips she was puffing away like it there was no tomorrow. Ok so..I didnt say anything when the blue poison started to drift up my nostrils as Maria knows that I have a few things to say about smokers and smoking, she fanned the smoke away from my face with a wink and a smile. We clinked our glasses and drank. We spoke about the “Global Crisis” whilst munching away on small cuts of Spanish tortilla. Ten minutes had passed and it was a nice relief to have a glass of beer and some tapas. Then Maria Lit another cigarette and I frowned. I frowned because I was a little taken aback by the short time between this one and the one before. This social gathering of ours went on for about an hour or so as we had a couple more drinks and some more “Spanish Culinary Delights”

But during this hour Maria smoked 4 cigarettes and when we left and she got in her car another one found its way between her lips and a lighter.

Why?

Why did Maria have to smoke all those cigarettes in such a short time? Even when Maria and the majority of all smoker know how bad it is for them, they still continue to have bouts of chain smoking. Some smokers smoke cigarettes like this for weeks, months or years. Why? The true answer is Maria and other smokers that do this, are trapped in realms of nicotine addiction. Nothing more, Nothing less. Additionally, tagged to the answer is that because of this evil addiction, Maria and smokers alike have a proven misconception of two things. First of all that the cigarette is actually doing them something good ( see my List Of Excuses Post ) when in reality it’s doing the complete opposite. And that the smoking of a cigarette is helping them overcome some kind of boredom that in the eyes of a smoker is apparantely physically fixed with a cigarette, when the true fact that boredom is really just a state of mind.

Maria and all smokers are being fooled constantly by the power of this poison (nicotine) and the tobacco companies and our beloved media showing and convincing smokers that social events can only be enjoyed with a smoke. The more you smoke the more fun you will have. (And the more money we make while you are killing yourself..now thats fun) The more they use it the more they are fooled. They are fooled into believing that social events are not only enjoyable but cool.

Have you ever heard so much puppydoo in your life?

Maria has developed a tolerance and a fear to smoking cigarettes like all nicotine addicts do. It’s addiction shrouded by feel good buzzes, hits lifts, boosts or whatever a smoker claims to get when inhaling the poisons. The tolerance of nicotine which or wonderful, complex bodies can withstand up to a point, and the illusionary fear that life will be terrible if she decided to quit smoking and become a normal human being.

Maria probably was tired, maybe stressed from personal issues, enjoying the atmosphere and the drinks, thinking about what to wear tonight, bored, needed to have a better opportunity to taste the beer. Whatever was going through Maria’s mind-life during that hour was surely not in her eyes something called “nicotine addiction-where the substance makes think that the more you use it, the more you benefit from it”

This is the brainwashing we have in our society.

There is no need as a human being and for Maria to live a normal, healthy life to use cigarettes. It is the truth and I am a product with millions of people too of that truth. If you chain smoke then the more you do it the more you are addicted. The good thing is that you can stop smoking, stop chain smoking, if you have the desire and the know how as to why you smoke tobacco.

Smoking cigarettes creates the ongoing need for cigarettes and the next one , and then the next one. and then the next one.

Break the chain and live again.

An Introduction to Herb Garden Plants

Gardening herbs is highly rewarding. You get to enjoy the benefits of a great hobby and you also get to enjoy the benefits of the herbs you grow. Those just getting started with growing herbs may need a starting point. Familiarizing yourself with the different kinds of herbs will help you decide which plants are best for your garden. Knowing what kind of plants you are using helps you to plan a better garden. So, let go of your fears and get started today.

Annuals are herb garden plants, which will grow once a year. You plant these in the spring and tend to them through the summer. With proper maintenance, you should be able to enjoy the plants as well as their clippings all season. Annuals die in the fall due to weak root structure. The best way to be able to enjoy these plants again next year is to dry the blooms. These contain the seeds you need to replant in the spring. Examples of annuals are dill and borage.

Biennials are plants, which survive for two seasons. These typically will not create fruit until the second year. You will be able to enjoy the leaves from these plants both years. Just like the annuals, these can be replanted from the seeds they produce. Typically the stalks of biennials are much thicker the second year. The flavor and aroma from the herbs are also more pungent in the second year. Examples of biennials include caraway and parsley.

Perennials are plants, which will come back year after year. While the leaves will die off, the roots remain healthy. You will notice the plants budding again in the spring. By the summer, your plant will be in full foliage. The thing to look out for with perennials is their tendency to take over a garden.
