The Career of a Soldier
A survey of the events of two-thirds of a century--telling a story thrilling to every patriot, instructive to every observer of these times, and helpful to citizens in every station and of all beliefs who wish their country well--this man, humbly born, taught only in the nation's school, conquers a place among the great ones of the earth, restores unity to a divided people, and dies a plain ...
Car Hire Is A Great Way To Explore Ireland
With a good deal on car hire, Ireland opens up to the visitor in a way that is just not possible using public transport or going by foot. Just as with the rest of Europe, a set of wheels enables a tourist to get the full advantage of sights such as the modern urban miracle of Dublin, the many beautiful villages and the spectacular southern coastline.
Look at any guidebook for Ireland and you will find recommendations to seek out the hidden treasures of the country’s more remote areas. This is good advice – most of Ireland’s treasures lie off the beaten track but to find them you will need reliable car hire. Ireland has many car hire operators, and most of them are to be found near the biggest towns and cities, especially near the country’s major airports of Dublin, Cork and Shannon.
The Irish Republic’s road network has been historically underdeveloped compared to Northern Ireland, its neighbour. However, this has been largely turned around in recent years, thanks to the boost to the Irish economy in the 1990s and considerable amounts of funding from the European Union. As a result, most of the country’s national roads have been, or are in the process of being, upgraded. During the 1990s, Ireland changed from having just a few short sections of motorway to ambitious new trans-country motorways and dual carriageways, thanks to a National Development Plan.
For most people, the Internet is the best place to start looking for the best deals on car hire. Ireland boasts an increasingly large number of sites which point to the best prices, and indeed most international car hire companies have sections for Ireland and the British Isles. Anyone wishing to hire a car in Ireland will require a valid driving licence which is at least a year old and drivers will usually have to be 21 to 25 years old.
Drivers on Irish roads drive on the left, just as they do in the UK. Ireland’s drink-driving laws are also the same as in the UK, permitting just 0.8 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood. Unlike Britain though, the road signs in Ireland are in metric, so all distance and speed limit signals are measured in kilometres rather than miles.
Most cars on Irish roads are manual transmission, and car hire vehicles are no exception. Automatic vehicles are available but usually at a significantly higher price. Customers should always check with their car hire company before booking to check which vehicles are available.
