The Tarr Steps of Exmoor National Park
Tarr Steps
The Tarr Steps of Exmoor national park are a fine example of a prehistoric bridge built around 1000bc. Situated in a nature reserve the mysterious bridge is surrounded by ancient woodland and myths including the devils sunbathing rights. The stones are of mammoth size, each weighing in at around 5 tonnes each. The bridge crosses the river Barle with nearby burial mounds of Bronze Age settlers. Considered to be the countries oldest clapper bridge one really does wonder about the strength and ability of the ancient people. Clapper comes from the Latin for pile of stones.
The nature reserve enclosing the steps is packed full of some of Exmoors favourite citizens including the magnificent Red Deer, Birds of prey, Foxes and Badgers can be seen around and about roaming the beautiful area. You can take the fabulous Exmoor Safari to get a better view. Due to the surrounding ancient woodland many insects including rare ones live around the area. Trout, Salmon and Grayling are to be found in the river Barle running under the steps. Due to the areas great biodiversity Barle valley has been stated as a site of special scientific interest.
The ancient woodlands surrounding are sure to leave you breathless. Huge Oaks, Ash, Beech and Hazel grace the landscape with their wise and majestic old branches creating a stunning canopy over the bridge and river in the spring and summer. For fans of stunning trees it really is a place to visit in all seasons to see the progressive change from spring’s first shoots to summers big leaves, autumn’s delightful rustic colours and winters eerie bare branches. Fantastic wild flowers grow within the woodland really give us an indication of the age of this ancient wood. Stunning Bluebells carpet the spring floor the shade of the trees with hedges of summer fruits surrounding.
The local legend of the Tarr Steps is that the Devil himself built them in the result of a bet. The Devil is said to have claimed sun bathing rights on the bridge and forbade any mortal soul to cross with the punishment of death. Locals tested the water and sent an unlucky cat across which apparently perished when he reached the middle. The local parson challenged the Devil on the bridge and persuaded him to allow the locals to cross unharmed. The Devil was said to have given in but forbids crossing when he wants to bathe in summer’s sun on the steps.
Regular restoration work is undertaken on the steps due to damage from the river. It is also a heritage listed monument seen as a megalithic marvel. One would think that most of the damage came from the water itself but this is not true, it is what flows down the water which affects the stones. Materials such as debris and large tree branches and trunks hit the structure with great force in the fast flowing water, the floods have a large affect as well. This used to mean annual clearing but changes in the flow have meant this has not been needed since the 1950’s.
To get to Tarr steps you need to be on the Somerset side of Exmoor. You can get to it by foot from the villages of Exford and Simonsbath as well as from the road following Withypool on the B3223.
