4000 gallon koi pond pump placement question? new filter weir added...?
hey,
i ordered a new 31" savio filter weir ( water spillway) to have a wider waterfall. my 2600 gph pump after going through a filter wasn't cutting it so i ordered the exact same pump to have two running because the weir has two inlets. when i designed my pond i designed it so that in about a half of an hour all the Water and debree floats to the left side which is where the pump is located so if i put the second pump on the opposite side that would be screwed up. the second pump will not be going to a filter just the spillway and i want all the water to go to the filter. so my question is... should i put the second pump right behind the original? so that all of the water still goes to the original which is powering the filter? or have it on the other side to have an even water flow? if i have it on the other side will all the water in the pond still go to the original which is powering the filter atleast once an hour?
i know that was confusing but thankks so much!
Okay, I think I understand the question. The 31" Savio weir is a filter unto itself. You can have a pump plumbed straight to it and receive filtered water from the cascade. I would just place the pump as close to the waterfall as possible in as deep water as possible.
For the original filtered pump, I would just place it at the opposite end of the waterfall and far away from the other pump and have it return either to a different water feature or simply back into the pond at a different spot than the waterfall. It would be like having two filters and two returns on your pond so you don't have to worry about all of the water going through your single original filter. Also, if your filter is the bottleneck, having the water flow into another filter (the waterfall) afterward will reduce the flow even more.
Also, having two pumps located at different spots of your pond will help muck from accumulating in any one spot on the pond floor.
Since you'll have two pumps to power your pond and circulate water, I'd consider installing a pond skimmer or UV sterilizer if you haven't already.
How To Pick A Surface Skimmer. Information To Good Filtration
Two types of skimmer are available to the pond builder. The floating weir has a plate that is hinged below the waterline. The top edge floats at the water surface inside the skimmer housing. When water is drawn from bottom of the skimmer housing, outside the pond, the weir plate is pushed down by the head difference that now exists.
These results in top water, and any scum and debris on it, are being pulled off the pond and into the skimmer basket. The basket catches any large solids, such as leaves, but allows the water to pass on through to the filter. The major disadvantage of this design is that small fish can swim over the weir by pushing it down and be unable to get back into the pond.
The second design of skimmer has a floating collar. Instead of the flat plate in the weir design, this version has a circular collar that rises up and down within the basket. This principle has two advantages. Firstly, the weir cannot normally be seen from the viewing point and secondly any small fish swimming into the throat of the skimmer can swim round and out again into the pond.
Eventually, the ammonia level peaks, but nitrite continues to rise until the bacteria colony is sufficient to reduce the nitrite level by oxidation to nitrate. The result is that both ammonia and nitrite levels are reduced to a minimum and nitrate is available for absorption by the plant life now present in the pond, and the cycle begins again.
As koi grow, they eat more food and produce more waste. If a vegetable filter is inadequate or not installed, then nitrate levels may climb to an unacceptable level and you will have to carry out water changes to restore normal conditions. Nitrate can be reduced by means of the denitrification process, but this involves the use of bacteria that do not require oxygen.
